Day #186 12/12/11: There was the phone, then a beeper, then a smart phone, and eventually…

There might be nothing else to invent. A very cool day where I spent my day thinking of the week ahead and I also finished my Curt Flood book which got more interesting as it came to a close. I find it interesting that he was a very sound man but he also had his share of problems and mishaps. Depending on perspective, Flood was a man of integrity, warmth, and moodiness. But, when it comes down to it he spent his money, gave his money to the wrong people, and he also challenged baseball on a system that doesn’t exist anymore. He didn’t want to be owned by baseball and rightfully so he gave baseball a peace of mind as he wanted the right to negotiate with any team. 40 years ago that would have been crazy talk but the way Flood put it gave it some sort of semblance as teams no longer own you nor your contract after it expires. Back then, it was possible for teams just to renew your contract right away but now they have the option to see if they want to keep you and otherwise you can negotiate with any team you want. A great book about a system that I had no idea would be so detailed yet so interesting in so many realms.
