A pretty interesting day where I couldn’t register at Mission because of a dumb decision by me not to be registered into the system for winter so I had to wait until Monday to apply for winter/spring. I watched this movie the night before and it is a very interesting movie based on people being either happy or upset over certain circumstances in their lives. First there was a case where one of the main characters spent his life as a lawyer putting people in jail and he saw that he had almost the same characteristics as his criminals because he wasn’t a good person as he manipulated the system and in fact ran over another character in the movie whose life was ruined by the lawyer. That character in turn worked as a housekeeper and she was happier before the incident happened but when it happened she was very negative and hated life. She turned the corner though by realizing that you can’t control certain circumstances in life and you just have to keep moving on. Very minor though in this case, one of the characters was having an affair and his wife knew right away what was going on when his wallet was stolen but returned and she found out right away. This character wanted life to be unpredictable and exciting as he had the quote that got me thinking when he was conversing with his student about him getting into med school and helping people live another day “How ? By keeping them alive today so you can their misery until tomorrow?” The last character, Alan Arkin, really had a good performance portraying the typical 9-5 man who has a drug troubled son and a divorcee who hates him very much. He carries this with him everyday to work and he detests anyone who looks happy and tries to not get into life’s problems. One interesting subplot here is how he ends up firing the happiest looking guy in the company due to downsizing within the divisions of the company as he wants to “takes that smile off his face”. Later on, however, he is able to see the error of his ways and in some ways he makes up for it by asking his wife’s new husband to see if he can hire him and he in fact does. This character sees that even though his life is largely determined by luck or sheer bad luck in this case, he still had a semblance of heart and a willingness to speak about a realistic point of view. A very good movie that I was able to talk about with a friend of mine at work and he had some very interesting view points about how he might check it out for himself.
